Fundraising Ideas Collected by Randi Maehym

Skate-A-Thon- This is a fundraising concept that is best done during a “good weather” month and during the season. The idea is to get ALL of your skaters to have their friends and family pledge an monetary amount per mile they skate. I am talking $.15-maybe $.50 a mile, keep in mind your league will be tallying all the miles your league skates during practice. It is not hard to rack up the mileage quickly, 100 miles is definately a feasible goal in the process of a month. This is also a great thing to do prior to a bout because it is a great idea to organize community Skate,Walk, Bike and Runs in paved areas. This creates community awareness for your league as well as gives the residents participating a sense of endearment to your league. 20 skaters at $5.00 a mile per skater (collectively donations per skater) is $10,000. Plus its great publicity for your league and your upcoming events.

Chuck a Duck- courtesy of Jersey Shore Roller Girls. this is usually done when you have a captured Roller Derby audience. You order abunch of rubber ducks from a novelty catalogue, like oriental trading company. Then you paint a tarp like a target and roll it out during half time. You also number the ducks and then the skaters walk around selling the ducks in buckets (usually $3 for one and two for $5). The participants “chuck their duck” and whoever gets closest to the center wins a prize, season tix, whatever your sponsor donate. This fundraiser has been known to draw a consistent $2,000-$3,000.

Bake Sale-We kinda cheat on this one and get our sponsor bakeries to bake special LCHR cookies and cupcakes. We also make some stuff but the sponsors like the recognition and its worth them giving us a couple of dozen of cool baked goodies. We made $750 on this last bout.

Chic Fil A Spirit Nights-Every Tuesday Night our Chic Fil A designates a nite for a non profit. you have to get with their manager and schedule it. For that evening everyone who comes in and buys a chic sandwich a portion of the proceeds goes to your league. Its great for promoting a bout and raising $$$. Have some skaters in skates and derby boutfits(family friendly).

Derby Girl Fitness Camps
My new fav fundraising Idea, is a roller derby off skates boot camp class(60-90 mins) ie plyos, running core stuff. Schedule it in a park or at your facility(if its not a rink) and promo it through out your community. 2 classes a week x 10 people X $10-8 donation a class=$1600 a month plus great community relations as well a good routine for your skaters. Check  to see if your state/county require insurance for this, if you already have your own facility your insurance may cover this, but always better to be safe than sorry.

Community Trail Skates
My other fav is is trail skating for donations. Have something every other week at a family safe location, tell all of your fans you will be doing a trail skate(1-3miles) and invite their kids on bikes, strollers what ever, and have skate lessons available before and after the trail skate for donations to your league.

DerbyGirl Fitness and Health Product Sales and Distribution
So the if you dont know Herbalife/Derbalife is a line of awesome health and nutrition products that you sell yourself. One of the big champions of Derbalife is the awesome Krissy Krash. The way the stuff works is the more you sell the more you make of each  product, so if you were reaching out to the community and doing fitness camps. Email me if you want more info on this RandiMaehym@skatecourt.com

Fav Derby Girl- This one is real cheap and easy. You get pictures of all the players (we use rostered skaters) and mason jars, tape the pics on the jars and set them out on a table at the entrance of the bout. Have the announcers mention “Vote for your favorite derby girl by putting $$$ is their jar, the skater with the most $$ is crowned the crowd fav during half time”. We make about $1000 per bout on this idea.

Tile Drive- This is how Rose City Roller raised a portion of their funds for a new floor. The idea is that every little bit helps. Supporters can also donate online making it less energy to collect money.
Here is a link to their website- http://www.rosecityrollers.com/floor-it/

GoodSearch and GoodDining-this idea is courtesy of Peaks Peak Derby Dames, GoodSearch is a search engine like google but some of the income generated by your personal serches will go to your league. So you go to goodsearch.com and fill some stuff out, then (if you want) put your debit/credit card number in and it will track where you eat and hang out at, if it on their list, your league will get up to  6% of what you spent. This is the Good Dining program, just make sure your leagues non profit paperwork is done soyou can get this check. Its not tons of money but every bit helps, and its effortless.Encourage your fans to use GoodSearch and to list your league as their non profit.

What is Roller Derby

Roller Derby Floors

The SkateCourt flooring system is the only surface developed specifically for skating rinks. Our patented surface design gives quad skates and inlines the best grip in the industry. The two-level surface relief works in such a way, that the wheels only touch the top layer for low friction during cruise and speed skating; but for cornering and accelerating the wheels dig into the lower layer for high friction and wheel grip. SkateCourt is the most modern technology for general skating, speed skating, artistic skating and inline hockey and the combination thereof.

Houston Roller Derby

When jumping on the suspended tile floor, figure skaters feel the spring effect during push-off and landings for higher jumps and softer landings. Artistic skaters notice the low friction for longer push-offs and rolls. SkateCourts all around the world have the same surface specification, for consistent competitive skating experience.

Speed Skaters recognize the consistent wheel grip throughout the season; there is no diminishing surface grip because of the failing floor coating. This grip is consistent on any SkateCourt around the world, making equipment preparation easy.

SkateCourt is a superb surface for inline hockey. It has the same qualities as the floors used during the inline hockey world championships. The strong wheel grip makes for high speed skating maneuvers and stops. The surface profile reduces friction of the puck, for higher speeds and longer glides. The surface perforations prevent the puck from notoriously wobbling.

The precise locking system with a tremendously tight fit makes a seamless surface. The floor becomes monolithic, meaning a one piece slab. It does not feel like skating on separate tiles, there are no sounds, no clicks. Small star-shaped slits in the surface called diffusers dampen the rolling noise and also allow evaporation of fluids. A special woven underlayment further promotes the skate feel and feedback. The floor is anchored to prevent it from shifting.

Maintenance and cleaning are minimum by damp-mopping the dust on a daily bases and perhaps using a floor scrubber every three months or so. SkateCourt flooring systems are not coated, eliminating the laborious and expensive process of stripping and coating every season. The surface will last for more than 15 years with minimum maintenance, providing a consistent wheel grip.

SkateCourt is not effected by moisture or insects and therefore is unaffected by water damage in the building. SkateCourt tiles are easily assembled and disassembled and ideal as portable installation. An installation of a SkateCourt system typical takes one day.

SkateCourt tiles come in custom colors, which can be worked into different patterns of custom designs. To create a special atmosphere with lights off, we offer fluorescent tiles, which glow in the dark. These tiles can be arranged as speckled illuminations or lines on the surface.
